Heavy rain on Tuesday, October 13 caused water leaks at the Paralympic Center, located within National Stadium Park in Ñuñoa. The storm damaged the roof above the venue’s main court.
According to Cooperativa, water accumulated in the lower section of the stands, as shown in a video shared by Meganoticias. The original report also mentions the Olympic Training Center and does not specify the full extent of the damage.
So far, neither the Chilean Paralympic Committee, the Ministry of Sport nor the National Sports Institute (IND) has commented on the physical damage or any possible impact on other parts of the complex. CNN Chile, citing La Tercera, also reported flooding at the National Stadium’s multisport facility.
That same Tuesday, thunderstorms, heavy rain and hail hit several municipalities in the Metropolitan Region. Streets were flooded, buildings inundated and roofs torn off. The storm also forced the cancellation of María José Quintanilla’s concert at Santander Arena.
Images of the park worried female fans of BTS, the South Korean band that became the most visible global phenomenon in K-pop, the Korean pop music that draws a large and highly organized youth community in Chile. The group begins a series of three concerts this Wednesday, October 14 at the National Stadium, marking its first visit to the country.
After the weather front passed, X user @yoonincitoos shared a video of the stage already set up at the stadium in Ñuñoa and wrote that everything is ready, a reassuring sign for fans.
Ñuñoa Mayor Sebastián Sichel cleared up the uncertainty in his assessment of damage in the municipality. He said he spoke with the production company during a security meeting. "Access to the stadium was not affected at all, so there is no change regarding the concert," he said.
According to Sichel, the concert "is proceeding normally", and the first of BTS’s three shows will take place tonight as scheduled.
