Heavy rain accompanied by hail, thunder and lightning fell across parts of the Metropolitan Region on Tuesday afternoon. By 16:35, more than 13 thousand customers were without electricity.

T13 reported the figure, citing a report from the Superintendency of Electricity and Fuels (SEC), the agency that oversees electricity companies. Ex-Ante reported the same figure and the same time for the outages.

In response, the National Service for Disaster Prevention and Response (Senapred) declared a Red Alert for the Metropolitan Region. This alert level allows all available resources to be mobilized to respond to an emergency.

The hailstorm drew the attention of residents of the capital because it is an uncommon phenomenon. Several residents posted videos and photos on social media showing the precipitation, accumulated hail and thunderstorm.

Neither source reported injuries or specified which municipalities suffered the most damage. They also provided no forecast for the coming days or specific recommendations from the authorities.

Both outlets described the information as a developing story. As of the latest report, the SEC's official figure remained at more than 13 thousand customers without power, and Senapred's Red Alert remained in effect for the region.
