Deportes Copiapó defeated Cobreloa 2-1, the Primera B leader, this Sunday at Estadio Luis Valenzuela Hermosilla in round 27 of the promotion league. The result leaves the race for first place open with only a few rounds remaining in the regular season.
According to BioBioChile, the defeat puts the Calama team's lead at risk, as it could lose the top spot before the round ends. Cooperativa provided details of the goals and the standings.
The Lion of Atacama opened the scoring in the 58th minute with a goal by Axl Ríos. Diego Opazo extended the lead in the 76th minute. Cobreloa sought an equalizer but only managed to pull a goal back in the 89th minute through Gustavo Gotti.
The defeat left Cobreloa with 48 points. Its closest challenger, San Luis de Quillota, has 47 and will play away against Deportes Puerto Montt this Monday at Estadio Chinquihue. If the Canaries win, they will take the championship lead with 50 points.
For Copiapó, the victory has a different significance. The Atacama team reached 40 points and sits seventh, in the playoff places, in a table where every point matters in the final stretch.
The next round will be the third-to-last of the regular season. Copiapó will visit Unión Española, while Cobreloa will host Deportes Recoleta at Estadio Zorros del Desierto in Calama.
