The multisport facility, the Tennis and Racket Sports Training Center and the Contact Sports Center at National Stadium Park in Ñuñoa were flooded after Tuesday's storm in the Metropolitan Region. Sports Minister Francisco Riveros confirmed this after touring the complex.
According to La Tercera, Riveros arrived at the Ñuñoa stadium when videos showing the multisport facility turned into a lake were already circulating on social media. A leak sent water cascading onto the facilities, seriously compromising the surface where athletes train.
"They are flooded," the minister said of the three facilities. Cooperativa reported that the most affected spaces were the multisport facility and the Anita Lizana Center Court, which is part of the Tennis Center.
The damage also extended to the Paralympic Training Center, though to a lesser extent. There, the problem was roof leaks, according to Cooperativa.
Riveros said the ministry had requested support from the fire department. "They came and have already outlined a preliminary action plan," he said. He added that the priority, alongside protecting the infrastructure, is for athletes to continue training normally as far as possible.
The storm hit the entire capital. Providencia and Ñuñoa suspended classes at their municipal schools, and the hailstorm caused parking lot roofs to collapse in several municipalities while a Red Alert was in effect.
The National Sports Institute (IND), the agency that manages National Stadium Park, is preparing a detailed report on the affected infrastructure. The document will allow the damage to be assessed precisely and determine how to repair it. So far, authorities have not said when it will be ready.
