Owners of properties damaged this year by fires, floods, earthquakes or storms will pay lower property taxes in the second half of 2026. The Internal Revenue Service (SII) announced the measure in a statement published on its website.

According to Cooperativa, the agency aims to ensure that the amount charged reflects each property's actual condition, taking into account that a disaster can reduce its value.

Property taxes, officially called Territorial Tax, are paid by real estate owners. They are calculated using the assessed tax value, the value the state assigns to each property.

The benefit will cover two groups. The first consists of properties in areas that the relevant authorities reported to the SII as affected. The second includes properties whose damage is documented in the available records, provided the service can verify it.

According to BioBioChile, the initiative also covers other events of a similar nature that cause a significant decline in a property's value. The SII said it is repeating measures taken after previous disasters.

The reduction will be proportional to the extent of the damage. Owners who meet the requirements will not need to take any action: the SII will notify them directly when it completes its assessment.

If a damaged property is excluded from the automatic reduction, its owner can request a review of its assessed value. To do so, the owner must submit a Real Estate Request at Sii.cl and attach evidence of the damage.

Accepted documents include certificates from municipalities, regional ministerial secretariats, regional governments or other entities that provide emergency support. Photographs of the damage and any other evidence that helps establish the loss in value are also accepted.

Using that evidence, the SII will review each case and decide whether to reduce the assessed tax value, property taxes or both. The agency did not announce a deadline for submitting requests or a date for notifying beneficiaries.
