Former President Gabriel Boric on Thursday ruled out, at least for now, a second run for La Moneda. "Today I am not thinking about any candidacy. That is not my role," he said after breakfast with former President Michelle Bachelet and opposition leaders.

According to BioBioChile, the meeting took place in the morning at the headquarters of Fundación Horizonte Ciudadano in Ñuñoa. Bachelet convened it to thank them for the event organized after her unsuccessful bid to become United Nations Secretary-General.

According to Cooperativa, Boric was not on the original invitation list. He attended following a direct invitation from the former president, who served from 2006-2010 and 2014-2018.

The meeting came after Bachelet left the door open to another presidential run. Asked about his own prospects, the Broad Front politician avoided speculation. "I am not even going to entertain those scenarios," he replied, adding that he and the former president had agreed not to discuss candidacies.

Boric, who served from 2022 to 2026, focused on his political camp's defeat. In the 2025 election, the progressive candidate, Jeannette Jara (Communist Party), lost in the runoff to José Antonio Kast, now president.

"We lost, and we lost by a lot, in the last election, and it was not that long ago," he said. In his view, progressives are still asking themselves what happened. For that reason, he said, thinking about what will happen in three and a half years makes no sense today.

The former president also discussed the country's situation. He described people "experiencing anguish, unable to make ends meet," but also having dreams and hopes. He urged the left and center-left to go out and listen to them, because "it is not enough to talk only among ourselves."

Boric said he has been visiting schools recently and wants to continue doing so. He said he sees young people eager to participate and argued that the way forward involves building a fairer country rather than thinking about elections.

Who benefits from this stance remains uncertain. Boric is stepping aside from the contest for opposition leadership, while Bachelet keeps her option open. The next presidential election is expected in about three and a half years, according to the former president himself.
