The Board of the Central Bank of Chile appointed Carla Lagos Ioohs as the new head of its Corporate Risk Division, according to Diario Financiero. No other source has confirmed the appointment, and the outlet does not report when she will take up the role.
Lagos joins from Tanner Banco Digital. There, she was comptroller and head of the Internal Audit Division, the department that checks internally whether the company follows its own rules and manages its risks properly.
She has spent almost her entire career in Chilean banking. According to the same outlet, she previously worked at BancoEstado, Banco Falabella, Banchile Inversiones and CMR Falabella, the Falabella group's credit card.
In those roles, she specialized in auditing operational, technology and cybersecurity risks. Operational risks are losses that failures involving processes, people or systems can cause. Examples include a payment platform going down or a human error duplicating a transfer.
Her education also has a strong technology component. She holds a degree in industrial engineering with a specialization in computing from the University of La Frontera, in Temuco. She also holds a master's degree in Technology Management and Entrepreneurship from Adolfo Ibáñez University (UAI) and a postgraduate qualification in Information Technology Auditing from the University of Santiago (Usach).
What will she do at the Central Bank? According to Diario Financiero, one of her main duties will be to oversee the bank's own financial and nonfinancial risks. Financial risks relate to the money the institution manages, such as international reserves. Nonfinancial risks range from cyberattacks to operational failures or compliance problems.
The other task highlighted by the outlet is assessing whether internal controls are adequate and whether they actually work. Think of it as checking that a home's alarms, locks and procedures are in place and that the alarms also go off when they should.
The appointment has practical relevance for anyone in Chile. The Central Bank sets the monetary policy rate, which influences the cost of your loans, and also operates payment systems that move money between banks every day. Those systems' ability to withstand failures or cyberattacks directly affects the economy.
Diario Financiero does not report who previously headed the division or the reasons for the change. Nor does it specify whom Lagos will report to within the bank's organizational structure.
