Gonzalo Tapia opened the scoring in the 16th minute and Columbus Crew beat Toronto FC 4-2 on Saturday at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field in MLS (Major League Soccer, the league of the United States and Canada). Another Chilean, defender Benjamín Kuscevic, played for the opposing side.
According to BioBioChile, it was Tapia's third goal in MLS. ADN Radio added that the former Universidad Católica and Sao Paulo forward scored for a second consecutive match, having found the net last Sunday in the win over Cincinnati.
Santiago Rodríguez started the move and Tapia finished it with a shot inside the six-yard box. MLS Español described on X a triangular passing move between Rodríguez, Mo Farsi and the Chilean. The club itself celebrated the play on the same platform, highlighting the build-up.
Columbus extended the lead with a brace from Malte Amundsen, in the 21st and 48th minutes, and another goal from Brooks Lennon in the 59th. Toronto pulled two back through Daniel Salloi (69') and Josh Sargent (81'), but never threatened the result.
The goal carried a morale boost. On Wednesday, Tapia and Columbus lost the final of the US Open Cup, the United States' cup competition. Three days later, the striker started and delivered in the league.
His current form contrasts with that of Alexis Sánchez, whom ADN Radio describes as having serious trouble establishing himself in his first MLS season with CF Montreal.
The sources differ on the standings. ADN Radio, with the match still at 2-0, placed Columbus ninth and in a playoff spot. BioBioChile, with the final result, puts the team tenth in the Eastern Conference with 38 points, one place outside qualification.
