Claudio Alvarado, minister of both the Interior and the General Secretariat of Government (Segegob), announced that three security perimeters will be established in the Metropolitan Region because of the weather front that will affect the area between the Coquimbo and Los Lagos regions, according to Emol.
Alvarado made the announcement after chairing a technical meeting on the weather event. According to the outlet, the minister described a scenario of "highly unstable conditions, with high intensity on certain days and concentrated within certain hours", and focused on Tuesday the 20th.
According to the minister, showers, thunderstorms, wind, hail and snow are expected. He added that the likelihood of waterspouts and tornadoes is being assessed in some regions. Emol does not specify which regions those would be.
The first perimeter will be in Las Condes, in the area affected by the most recent mudslide. Alvarado said that "the likelihood of mass movements is high" there. The second will be in Puente Alto, in the area of the Valle Hermoso and El Sueño de Todos informal settlements.
The third will be established in Talagante, in the Rivera del Río area. According to the minister, around 100 homes there face a high likelihood of flooding.
According to Alvarado, the three areas were defined based on technical reports from the National Geology and Mining Service (Sernageomin) and the Chilean Meteorological Directorate.
Responding to questions, the minister ruled out the measure being a curfew. He explained that the aim is to reduce traffic and the arrival of people who do not live in those areas, and for residents to take precautions to minimize potential damage.
The Regional Presidential Delegation will release details of each perimeter tomorrow, and the operation will be coordinated with the Chilean police. Emol does not report how long the restrictions will remain in effect.
