A drunk driver was arrested on the morning of Sunday, October 11, in central San José de Maipo, in the Metropolitan Region. According to the police, the man crashed into a police vehicle and tried to run over officers conducting traffic checks.
According to Emol, one of the officers used his service weapon and fired two shots at the car. The driver was then arrested. Both sources agree that no one was injured.
A video captured the maneuver. The footage shows the driver trying to evade the patrol car, which was positioned in the middle of the street. He then crashes into the police vehicle and concrete blocks installed on the public road before stopping in the middle of the roadway. Officers apprehend him at that point.
According to Meganoticias, the impact destroyed the left side of the driver’s car. The sources do not report his identity, his age or the result of a blood alcohol test.
San José de Maipo Mayor Roberto Pérez addressed the damage. "This situation caused damage to public property, but what matters to us is that it could have caused an accident, a tragedy," he said.
The police handed the case information to the Public Prosecutor’s Office (the Prosecutor’s Office). The man was detained for drunk driving and attempted homicide against police officers. In simple terms, attempted homicide here refers to an attack in which everything necessary to cause a death was allegedly done, although no death occurred. For now, this is the classification the police used when arresting him, not a formal charge.
The case is at the detention stage. The next step is a detention review hearing before a pretrial judge, where the Prosecutor’s Office may formally notify the accused that he is under investigation (officially inform him that it is investigating him) and request precautionary measures. The sources do not report the date of that hearing or the case number.
