Alejandro Tabilo was eliminated in his opening match at the Shanghai Masters 1000 in China. Spain's Pablo Carreño Busta, ranked 65th in the world, came from behind in the second round to win 4-6, 7-6(2) and 6-4.
According to La Tercera, the Chilean entered the tournament ranked 30th in the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) rankings. He was seeded number 29 in the draw, giving him a first-round bye.
The match was the second on court 4 at the Qi Zhong Tennis Center. According to Cooperativa, both players entered with one win apiece in their head-to-head record. The match lasted two hours and 43 minutes.
"Jano" made the stronger start. He broke serve in the third game, and that advantage was enough to take the first set 6-4.
In the second set, he again broke his opponent's serve in the fifth game to go 3-2 up. Carreño immediately broke back and took the set to a tiebreak. There, the Asturian raised his level and won it 7-2.
The momentum shifted in the deciding set. Carreño broke serve in the fifth game and held that advantage to close it out 6-4.
The defeat comes after an uneven week. At the Tokyo ATP 500, Tabilo had beaten American Tommy Paul, ranked 16th in the world, 6-1 and 6-2, but then lost in three sets to Canadian Denis Shapovalov.
According to Cooperativa, the elimination complicates the Chilean's end to the season in the rankings, although he has few points to defend to maintain his position. Shanghai is the year's penultimate Masters 1000.
Carreño Busta advanced to the third round, the round of 32, where he will face Canadian Felix Auger Aliassime (5th), who beat Argentina's Camilo Ugo Carabelli 4-6, 7-6(1) and 7-5.
