San Luis de Quillota missed the chance to clinch the Primera B title this Saturday. They drew 1-1 with Deportes Recoleta at home, while Cobreloa beat bottom-placed Rangers 0-1 at the Fiscal de Talca stadium with a late goal. Both enter the final matchday with 54 points.
According to BioBioChile, San Luis's equalizer came in the dying moments. Humberto Suazo's team ran into trouble early: TNT Sports Chile posted on X that Ignacio Meza was shown a red card following a VAR (video assistant referee) review in the opening minutes. With a player advantage, Recoleta scored at the end of the first half, according to the same broadcast.
San Luis needed a win and for Cobreloa to fail to win in Talca. Cobreloa did their part and now share the lead. Santiago Wanderers won 2-1 away to Unión Española to reach 50 points, a total that leaves them out of the title race on matchday 30.
The outcome also hinges on administrative decisions. The ANFP (National Professional Football Association) suspended any trophy presentation for San Luis because of the pending complaints against Deportes Puerto Montt and San Marcos de Arica. If either or both clubs are expelled, their results will be erased and the standings will change.
According to La Tercera's analysis, published before this matchday, every expulsion scenario benefits Cobreloa. If Puerto Montt are expelled, Cobreloa would gain two points from the 1-1 draw between the sides, while San Luis would gain nothing because they beat the southern club in both matches.
A sanction against San Marcos de Arica would give Cobreloa another three points. If both clubs are expelled, La Tercera calculated that San Luis could drop as low as fifth, behind Magallanes, Deportes Antofagasta and Santiago Wanderers. Those calculations used the points totals before matchday 29 and will need updating.
The same outlet noted that if two teams finish level in first place, the rules provide for a title playoff match between them. The sources do not say when the complaints will be resolved. The final matchday will take place next weekend.
