Chile España station on Line 3 of the Metro de Santiago (the Chilean capital's subway system) closed on Wednesday, October 7, because of a police operation inside it. The operation began after a robbery at a bank branch located at Irarrázaval and Macul, in the comuna (municipality) of Ñuñoa.

According to Cooperativa, Carabineros (Chile's national police) and Ñuñoa municipal security staff carried out the operation at the station. Preliminary information indicates that an alleged criminal linked to the robbery fled armed into the Metro and, when he was detained, inflicted injuries on himself.

At 13:38, Metro de Santiago said on its X account that Chile España was closed and trains were not stopping because of the Carabineros operation. Line 3 trains kept running but did not stop at that station.

Media accounts differ on the outcome of the robbery. Cooperativa describes it as a failed robbery. CNN Chile, however, reported that a group of individuals allegedly carried out a multimillion robbery at a Banco Itaú and that some of them allegedly fled into the Metro. No source specified the amount or how many people took part.

Carabineros referred to a "procedure in progress" and confirmed, on a preliminary basis, that a suspect was under police control. Meganoticias reported the same information in its afternoon report.

According to CNN Chile, the detained man was taken to Hospital del Salvador. His condition and identity are not yet known, nor is it known whether other participants in the robbery have been detained or remain at large. No time was given for the station's reopening.
