Venezuela's foreign minister, Félix Plasencia, expressed his government's solidarity with Chile on Saturday following the mudslide and heavy rains that affected Las Condes and other areas in Santiago's Andean foothills.
According to CNN Chile, Plasencia shared the message on his X account. In it, he said Venezuela stands in solidarity with the Chilean people and government following the "devastating mudslides and heavy rains" recorded in the capital.
In the same post, the Venezuelan foreign minister wrote that his country is closely following developments in the emergency. He also reiterated its "willingness to support" the affected population.
So far, Venezuela has not specified what kind of assistance it could offer Chile. The message also makes no mention of formal contacts with the Chilean government, and the sources report no response from Chile's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Damage figures vary by news outlet. CNN Chile reported 2,015 homes affected, 55 of them with major damage, and six people injured.
La Tercera cited the latest assessment from the Metropolitan Directorate of the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (Senapred). According to that report, the emergency has left 384 people affected, 1,000 evacuated and six injured.
Senapred counts 56 homes destroyed, 40 with major damage and 1,960 with minor damage. The agency added that 1,200 people were rescued from vehicles, houses, gas stations and other facilities in the municipality.
Water and mud entered areas including Camino El Alba al Norte, Quebrada Honda Sur, General Blanche and Vital Apoquindo, all in Las Condes.
Senapred is maintaining a red alert for mass movements in San José de Maipo, Puente Alto, Pirque, La Florida, Peñalolén, La Reina, Las Condes, Lo Barnechea, Vitacura and Colina. The regional yellow alert for a weather event also remains in effect.
