A 33-year-old Chilean man was seriously injured after being shot in the mouth during a robbery at around 21:30 on Monday, October 12, at the intersection of Vicuña Mackenna and Viollier in the municipality of Santiago.
According to BioBioChile, the North Central Prosecutor's Office and the Carabineros OS9 unit (a police investigation section specializing in violent crimes) are investigating the case. No arrests have been made so far.
According to prosecutor Felipe Olivari, three individuals approached the victim as he was passing through the area. The prosecutor said all are believed to be minors and were carrying firearms.
"Armed with firearms, they intimidate him and attempt to rob him. One of them shoots him in the mouth with a pistol, and the bullet entered through the palate," Olivari recounted. After the man fell, the attackers took his belongings and fled. The sources did not specify which items they took.
The victim made his own way to a healthcare facility, whose name was not disclosed. He remains there in serious condition, but his life is not at risk. The prosecutor explained that the bullet remained lodged near the palate, with no exit wound, and that the medical team will assess whether surgery to remove it is possible.
The case is at the preliminary investigation stage, meaning the phase in which the Prosecutor's Office and police gather information to identify the perpetrators before anyone is formally accused. The sources did not report a case number (RUC, Unique Case Number).
As the next step, the North Central Prosecutor's Office instructed OS9 to review security camera footage from the area and conduct forensic examinations at the scene to locate the three suspects.
