Claudio Alvarado, Minister of the Interior and Minister Secretary-General of Government (Segegob), announced on Sunday night that classes would be suspended on Tuesday, October 20 in 10 municipalities in the Metropolitan Region, according to meganoticias.cl.
According to the outlet, the measure applies to municipalities that remain under Red Alert due to the weather event affecting the capital. They are San José de Maipo, Puente Alto, Pirque, La Florida, Peñalolén, La Reina, Las Condes, Lo Barnechea, Vitacura and Colina.
Almost all are in eastern Santiago and its foothills, while Colina is in the north of the region. Authorities have focused monitoring on rainfall and possible landslides in ravines and waterways in those areas.
The announcement came after some municipalities took measures on their own. Ñuñoa and Providencia suspended classes in their municipal schools. Las Condes initially closed some establishments and later expanded the list to 21 schools and preschools.
Before the announcement, a petition had also circulated calling for classes to be suspended on Tuesday in municipalities in the foothills, with an appeal that "hopefully they can switch to remote learning".
So far, the source has not specified whether the suspension covers all levels and types of educational establishments, whether there will be remote classes or how missed days will be made up. Families in those 10 municipalities should await notices from their school and municipality and follow authorities' instructions while the Red Alert remains in effect.
Meganoticias.cl described the information as a developing story. The measure applies to Tuesday, October 20.
