José Francisco Lagos said goodbye this Tuesday to the Subsecretaría General de Gobierno (Segegob, the government's communications office), according to ADN Radio, after President José Antonio Kast accepted his resignation. The former undersecretary announced his departure on his Instagram account.
"It has been an honor to serve Chile as Undersecretary General of Government", Lagos wrote. In the same message he thanked the President for the trust placed in him.
The post also thanked Minister Claudio Alvarado and former minister Mara Sedini. According to Lagos, he shared "important challenges during this period" with both of them.
The former undersecretary made clear that his ties to the Government continue. "I remain firmly committed and will continue to support the vision for the future led by President Kast", he added in his farewell.
According to ADN Radio, the Executive thanked Lagos for his work and dedication during his tenure. The outlet reported that, despite leaving the Segegob, he will continue working with the President on various matters. The source did not specify what those tasks will be or whether he will hold a formal post.
The reasons for the resignation have not been made public either. Neither Lagos nor the Government explained them in the statements gathered by ADN Radio.
The Segegob is the agency in charge of the Executive's communications and its relationship with the public. Its undersecretary usually plays a key role in coordinating the official spokesperson's office.
To replace Lagos, Kast appointed lawyer and historian Gonzalo Arenas Hödar as the new Undersecretary General of Government. Arenas will also serve as spokesperson for the Executive, which places La Moneda's (the presidential palace) communications leadership in a single person.
