President José Antonio Kast travelled on Wednesday to Los Ángeles, in the Región del Biobío (Biobío Region), to attend the funeral of Sergeant Second Class Jaime Urrea Burgos of Carabineros (Chile's national police). The officer died after being shot during a police operation in the comuna (municipality) of Quilleco.
According to ADN Radio, the ceremony took place at the Catedral Santa María de Los Ángeles. Family members, Carabineros officers and various officials attended. The President's arrival was preliminarily scheduled for around 09:00.
The events took place on the night of Sunday, October 4. Urrea and other officers went to a home in Quilleco in response to a domestic violence report. After that first intervention, Carabineros received a new call for help from the same house, and the officers went back.
During that second operation, the attacker opened fire on the officers. One of the bullets struck the sergeant in the neck. He was rushed to a medical facility, where his death was confirmed. The sources provide no information on the legal status of the alleged perpetrator.
According to La Tercera, Urrea is the 1,265th fallen member of Carabineros. The Government declared national mourning on October 5, 6 and 7 in tribute to the officer.
Kast also addressed the case on his X account. "Today Chile bids farewell to one of its servants. My condolences to his family and to the entire institution of Carabineros de Chile", the President wrote.
About a week ago, the President attended the funeral of posthumous Senior Non-Commissioned Officer Cristopher Andrés Aguilera Fernández, who died in Lo Espejo. With Urrea, two police officers have been laid to rest in roughly seven days.
