The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) provisionally suspended Cristiano Ronaldo and opened disciplinary proceedings against him. The punishment follows his departure from Portugal's training camp during the latest FIFA international window, while the team was competing in the Nations League, UEFA's national team tournament.

According to La Tercera, the FPF's Non-Professional Section decided on October 9, 2026, to open proceedings to "investigate any disciplinary significance" of the events reported on October 7.

The statement specifies that, in addition to the automatic provisional suspension already in effect, a non-automatic provisional suspension was imposed on the player. The federation also declared the case urgent.

Cooperativa, citing a statement reproduced by the Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, dates the events to September 30 and says the formal complaint was received on Wednesday, October 7. According to that outlet, the case file was transferred on October 10 to the FPF's Disciplinary Investigation Committee, which will keep it confidential until the investigation ends.

The conflict stems from a clash with national team coach Jorge Jesus. Ronaldo, 41, left the team before the last match of the three-match international window, an away game against Denmark. In a lengthy letter on Instagram, he accused the coach of failing to honor what he had promised about Ronaldo's participation in that match.

Jesus defended his decisions and played down the issue, describing it as "a misunderstanding that is easy to resolve". The Portuguese press reported, however, that the coach and the federation president went to the airport to try to persuade the forward before he traveled to Madrid.

The case also drew a response in Chile. Arturo Vidal, Colo Colo's captain, backed Cristiano and called what happened with the Portuguese national team a disgrace.

The sources do not report how long the final sanction could last. For now, the decision rests with the Disciplinary Investigation Committee, which received the case file on October 10 marked as urgent.
