The Government has suspended classes in 16 comunas (municipalities) of the Valparaíso region, according to BioBioChile. The decision follows the forecast of a strong frontal system that will affect the country from part of the north to the central zone.
The Ministerio de Educación (Mineduc, the Ministry of Education) confirmed the measure in a statement, according to that outlet. So far, no other source has independently corroborated the details.
The suspension applies to public and private schools. It covers preschool, primary and secondary education.
The affected comunas are Los Andes, Calle Larga, Rinconada, San Esteban, Catemu, Putaendo, Santa María, Cabildo, Petorca, La Ligua, Quillota, La Calera, Quilpué, Villa Alemana, Limache and Olmué.
The list mainly covers inland comunas of the region, in the provinces of Los Andes, San Felipe, Petorca, Quillota and Marga Marga. The city of Valparaíso and Viña del Mar do not appear on the reported list.
The source does not specify how many days the suspension will last or how many students will be affected. Nor does it give the expected rainfall amounts or say whether measures will be taken for other regions.
BioBioChile said it is gathering more information. Families in those 16 comunas should follow Mineduc announcements to find out when classes will resume.
