A 14-year-old boy died on Wednesday, October 21, from a cut wound to the left groin. Before that, a group of unknown people attacked him at the intersection of Conferencia and Tucapel streets, in the comuna (municipality) of Santiago.
According to CNN Chile, the Brigada de Homicidios Centro Norte (North Central Homicide Unit) of the Policía de Investigaciones (PDI, Chile's investigative police) is investigating the case on the instructions of the Ministerio Público, the public prosecutor's office that leads criminal investigations.
According to police information, the incident took place at around 15:00, while the teenager was walking through the comuna. Subcomisario (deputy inspector) Matías Maulén, of that unit, explained that the individuals, "after a verbal argument, attacked him with punches and kicks", and then fled in an unknown direction.
The teenager made his own way back home. There, his relatives found him with the wound and helped him. He was then taken to Hospital Dr. Exequiel González Cortés, in San Miguel, where he died from the severity of the injury.
Personnel from the Brigada de Homicidios went to the scene and confirmed the death. So far, no one has been arrested or charged, and the sources provide no information on the identity or exact number of the attackers.
The case is under investigation. The PDI stated that the inquiries aim to clarify "whether the injury that caused the victim's death resulted from the intervention of third parties". In other words, the police have not yet confirmed that the wound was caused by the attackers.
The sources do not report whether there is a case number or whether the Fiscalía (prosecutor's office) has ordered further inquiries. The next step will depend on the forensic examinations by the Brigada de Homicidios and on instructions from the Ministerio Público.
