A 22-year-old man was found dead on Sunday afternoon in the El Ají canal, in the municipality of Lo Barnechea (Metropolitan Region). He had disappeared the previous night after meeting a group of friends.
According to BioBioChile, the body was in the water near 15,120 Los Refugios Road, in the upper part of the capital. T13 placed the discovery in the El Arrayán area. Neither source reported the young man's identity.
Both outlets provided the timeline. The young man spent Saturday night with his friends, who lost contact with him in the early hours. When he did not return home, those close to him began searching on Sunday morning and found his body in the canal.
The police arrived first to carry out the initial inquiries. The Prosecutor's Office then assigned the case to the Homicide Brigade of the Investigative Police (PDI), which worked at the scene. The young man's parents also arrived there.
Commissioner Javier Campos, of the Metropolitan Homicide Brigade, told the press that the deceased was an adult male who "preliminarily shows no signs of third-party involvement". He added that the young man was found with all his belongings.
According to Campos, detectives are taking statements and canvassed local residents. This involves going through the area to identify potential eyewitnesses.
The case is under investigation, and no one has been arrested or charged. The cause of death has not yet been reported. It should be established through an autopsy by the Legal Medical Service, although the sources do not mention this procedure.
The commissioner cautioned that, although third-party involvement has been preliminarily ruled out, "everything is subject to investigation" until all the evidence has been gathered. Inquiries continue under the direction of the Prosecutor's Office.
