Michelle Bachelet emerges as the best presidential candidate among those who identify with the left and center-left. That is according to the latest Cadem poll, published in the second week of October. In that group, the former president has 47% support, compared with 44% for former president Gabriel Boric.

As Cooperativa reported, the gap between the two is narrow. The figure reflects only the opinion of one political sector, rather than the entire electorate.

The results change when the full sample is asked about "the best candidate on the left." According to the Cambio21 website, Bachelet receives 41% in that case, Boric 24% and Santiago Mayor Tomás Vodanovic 13%.

Nationally, the longtime Socialist Party (PS) member ranks as the leading figure of the week, with 37%. In addition, 29% identify her as the main leader of the center-left and left-wing parties.

The poll comes after her unsuccessful bid to become Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN). Following that setback, Bachelet said in an interview that she had not ruled out a third presidential run. She has already governed Chile for two terms, from 2006 to 2010 and from 2014 to 2018.

For Boric, of the Broad Front, the result shows that he retains substantial support within his political sector, although he trails the former president. Vodanovic emerges as a third option, far behind both.

The poll also assessed the current government. 32% approve of President José Antonio Kast's performance, while 64% disapprove, down one percentage point from the previous poll. 4% did not respond.
