Six people died in road crashes, all outside the capital region, during the long weekend for Encounter of Two Worlds Day. Police also recorded 117 road crashes that left 74 people injured.
The figures are part of the uniformed police force's latest traffic report, according to La Tercera. The report covers data from Friday through 23:59 on Saturday, October 10. It does not specify which regions the deaths occurred in or the circumstances of each case.
During that period, 260,373 vehicles left the Metropolitan Region (RM). Of those, 30% took Route 5 South, 22% Route 78, 21% Route 68 and 20% Route 5 North.
Police have carried out 29,667 checks and inspections in the field, including 8,165 tests. Of these, 8,094 were breathalyzer tests (tests to measure alcohol in the breath) and 71 were drug tests, which detect drug use.
Police arrested 86 people. Of the total, 44 were arrested for driving while intoxicated, 15 for driving under the influence of alcohol, 22 for driving under the influence of drugs and five for reckless driving. The sources provide no information on detention review hearings or subsequent formal charges.
Nationwide, police issued 938 traffic citations. 600 of them were for speeding, 301 for failure to wear a seat belt and 37 for the absence of a child restraint system, the mandatory seat for transporting children.
The report is preliminary and does not include the return to Santiago. Police remain deployed along the country's main routes until the end of the holiday, when a new report with consolidated figures is expected.
