A fire was affecting the Gelymar salmon plant on Sunday afternoon, on the boundary between the municipalities of Puerto Montt and Calbuco in the Los Lagos region, according to BioBioChile. The outlet reported that the emergency was still unfolding.
According to preliminary information reported by BioBioChile, various chemicals and petroleum were reportedly stored in the plant’s warehouses. The fire sent a large column of black smoke over the site.
Calbuco lies southwest of Puerto Montt, the regional capital, in the coastal area of Reloncaví Sound. The plant is in the rural area connecting the two municipalities.
At the time of publication, the source had provided no information about injuries, evacuations or the number of fire companies working at the scene. There were also no details about the cause of the fire.
BioBioChile also reported no public alerts over the smoke or statements from authorities. Neither the Los Lagos Regional Presidential Delegation, the municipalities of Puerto Montt and Calbuco, nor the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (Senapred) had provided information, according to the source.
The outlet said it was continuing to gather information. Details about efforts to bring the fire under control, the risks posed by the stored chemicals and possible measures for nearby residents depend on subsequent reports.
