A bus carrying members of the Chilean Chamber Orchestra plunged down an embankment on Saturday night in the Diego Portales area of Valparaíso. According to BioBioChile, the accident left one person dead and at least 30 injured, based on preliminary information from firefighters.
The vehicle was transporting the musicians from Federico Santa María Technical University. For reasons that remain unclear, it fell into the parking lot of a building in the area and struck a car.
Firefighters and emergency personnel arrived at the scene. Ambulances from Valparaíso and Viña del Mar were dispatched to treat those affected.
The Chilean Chamber Orchestra falls under the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage. The emergency therefore directly involves the state as the musicians' employer.
President José Antonio Kast responded on his X account. He wrote that he was "deeply saddened by the serious accident" and confirmed that government teams have been deployed to assist the injured. He also offered his prayers for the person who died.
The source does not report the identity of the person who died or the condition of those injured. It also does not specify which government departments are providing assistance.
The exact circumstances of the accident remain under investigation. Authorities will need to confirm the final number of injured people in the coming hours.
