A group of around seven people entered Liceo Polivalente San José de la Preciosa Sangre in the municipality of Quinta Normal early Thursday morning. They took around 70 computers and 46 cellphones, valued at at least 30 million pesos.
La Tercera reported the theft, citing Commissioner Daniel Iturriaga of the Investigative Police (PDI). According to the officer, the devices were in a library used by the school’s students.
BioBioChile specified that the theft occurred at around 0:30 at the school, located on Padre Bernardo Mores Street. The outlet reported that the perpetrators arrived in a vehicle with altered license plates.
The sources describe the entry somewhat differently. Iturriaga told La Tercera that the individuals entered "by climbing in at a vulnerable point" and forced open interior doors. Prosecutor Felipe Olivari of the North Central Prosecutor’s Office told BioBioChile that they forced open one of the exterior gates and broke through several doors to enter different rooms.
According to the commissioner, the gang searched several areas before taking the devices. They then loaded the stolen items into a vehicle. According to BioBioChile, some fled on foot and others in the same car in which they had arrived.
So far, no arrests have been made, and the sources have not reported the case number. The investigation is at an early stage, with police gathering evidence to identify those responsible, before any formal charging hearing (the hearing at which the Prosecutor’s Office informs a person of the charges before a judge).
The sources also do not report how the theft will affect classes or whether the devices were insured.
The North Central Prosecutor’s Office assigned the investigation to the PDI’s Metropolitan Robbery Brigade, which will review security camera footage and collect evidence at the school.
