President José Antonio Kast traveled on Wednesday to Los Ángeles, in the Biobío Region, to attend the funeral Mass for Second Sergeant Jaime Urrea Burgos. The officer of Carabineros (Chile's national uniformed police) was shot and killed while responding to a domestic violence call in the comuna (municipality) of Quilleco.

According to Cooperativa, a large crowd gathered at the Santa María Cathedral to show its support for Carabineros. That outlet reported that Urrea is the fifth martyr of the institution during the Kast administration and the second in just one week.

The president arrived at around 09:00, according to El Mostrador. The sergeant's relatives, Carabineros personnel and other authorities also attended the ceremony.

"Chile today bids farewell to one of its servants. My condolences to his family and to the entire institution of Carabineros de Chile", Kast wrote on social media.

The killing took place on Sunday, October 4. Urrea went to a home in Quilleco after a domestic violence report. There were two calls for help. During the second, the attacker fired at the officers, and one of the bullets struck the sergeant.

The available sources do not detail the attacker's legal situation, nor do they report any new Government measures on police safety. Domestic violence calls, however, are once again emerging as a high-risk setting for the officers who respond to them.

Following the killing, the Government declared national mourning on October 5, 6 and 7 in honor of Sergeant Urrea.
