A 29-year-old driver died this Saturday, October 17, in Buin, in the Metropolitan Region, after his vehicle overturned and came to rest on the bank of the Maipo River. The man died at the scene from the severity of his injuries.
According to CNN Chile, the accident occurred at around 15:00, at the intersection of Ribera del Río Maipo and Puente Viejo. Officers from the 15th Carabineros Police Station went to the scene after receiving a report of the crash.
Preliminary information indicates that the driver lost control of the car, which rolled over and fell toward the riverbank. The victim’s identity has not been released.
Buin firefighters, the Emergency Medical Care Service (SAMU) and Carabineros responded to the emergency. The X account IEC-180 CONTROL STGO reported the incident, describing it as a passenger vehicle collision followed by a fall from the Maipo Bridge, in the Route 5 South area. That account differs in part from the version provided by Carabineros, which describes a rollover after the driver lost control.
According to Radio Biobío, the Prosecutor’s Office ordered investigative work by the Carabineros Traffic Accident Investigation Section (SIAT). Experts will reconstruct how the accident unfolded and determine what caused the rollover.
The exact causes of the crash remain undetermined. The findings of the SIAT investigation will be key to establishing why the vehicle went out of control on that stretch beside the Maipo River.
